Profile
ACSM is an individual membership society representing the profession of surveying and mapping. The organization was founded in 1941
Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, cartographers, geodesists, and other spatial data information professionals working in both public and private sectors throughout the world.
ACSM is made up of four member organizations, which serve as special interest groups. The member organizations are:
American Association for Geodetic Surveying (15% of ACSM members);
Cartography and Geographic Information Society (formerly the American Cartographic Association) (15%);
Geographic and Land Information Society, our newest member organization (10%);
National Society of Professional Surveyors (70%).
ACSM members must join at least one of the member organizations when they sign up. The percentages add up to more than 100% because many members have elected to join more than one member organization.
Each member organization has its own board of directors and addresses areas of particular interest to its constituents, but all four organizations function within the structure of ACSM and embrace the objectives of the society as a whole.
ACSM represents the interests of the profession (all segments) and advocates for public policy decisions that are in the long-term interest of the surveying and mapping profession and the nation overall.
ACSM information outlets include the magazine ACSM Bulletin and the journals Cartography and Geographic Information Systems and Surveying and Land Information Systems, a catalog of more than 100 books on industry-related subjects, and information about advertising and marketing opportunities in ACSM publications and other programs.
ACSM sponsors two major conferences each year, the Annual Conference in the Spring and a specialty conference in the Fall. These important industry events typically attract between 2,500 and 4,000 attendees. In addition, special conferences are organized to support and complement the needs of ACSM's members. For more information, contact Kevin C. Flynn, Director of Communications and Government Affairs, at 301-493-0200, ext. 105.
